Show Up with No Guarantees

Over the last 26 years I’ve trained thousands of nurses who are interested in pursuing careers in legal nurse consulting. While these Certified Legal Nurse ConsultantsCM have gone on to create successful businesses ranging from $100,000-$1,000,000 in annual revenue, some interested nurses are still working 12-hour shifts at the hospital and only dreaming of creating their legal nurse consulting practices. One limiting attitude that prevails among those who only dream is the desire for a guarantee of success.
Show Up First – Showing up with no guarantee doesn’t mean blindly stepping off a cliff or dropping your pay check on lottery tickets and trusting you’ll win. Skydivers carefully pack their own parachutes, scuba divers check their own gear and entrepreneurs write business plans. When you start any new venture, you can and should strategize, but you can’t guarantee the outcome. If you want a guarantee, forget it. When you start a legal nurse consulting practice, you can’t foresee your exact future. It’s not like checking your caller ID to see who’s calling before you pick up the phone.
In this business, like any venture in life, you have to show up before you get a clue about what you’ll find at the other end of the line. You’ve got to show up as a Certified Legal Nurse ConsultantCM and put out the effort to be a competent, professional CLNC® consultant with no guarantee of the end result and no guarantee of what your future holds. That might feel scary, but the only thing that’s certain is this: If you do nothing, that’s exactly what you’ll achieve.
Remember, we reap what we sow but not necessarily all at the same time. If you plant excellent seeds (your nursing expertise, your CLNC® training) and take wonderful care of those seedlings (providing top-quality service and developing professional relationships with your attorney-clients) your harvest will come. Of course what we plant takes time to grow, and people, like plants, grow at different rates. You might not be able to predict the quantity or the quality of your ultimate crop, but if you keep cultivating it, season after season, your efforts will be rewarded.
Invest Today – Show up today and invest today for tomorrow’s achievements. Someone once approached the great violinist Fritz Kriesler and commented, “I’d give my life to play as beautifully as you do.” The musician responded, “I did.”
Make the investment today, and eventually the music will come. But until you’ve paid your dues, you won’t know whether you’ll be playing background music at a local restaurant or soloing at Carnegie Hall. When Kriesler started studying the violin, he had no assurance that he was destined to become a world-famous musician. When you start your CLNC® practice, you have no assurance that it will be successful, satisfying or profitable.
It takes courage to make that kind of investment, to commit your life to something when you’re unsure of the precise outcome. In Dune, Frank Herbert said that fear is the mind killer. Fear is more crippling than polio, more deadening than the most potent anesthetic. Commit yourself to ending your attachment to fear today.
Stretch Yourself – Make the effort to stretch and grow, to conquer your fear, and you can reach phenomenal heights. When you do, you will surprise yourself. You’ll achieve something far greater than you could have imagined. Your achievement may not look exactly like what you’d envisioned – in fact, it probably won’t – but it will be your creation, out of your own experience, effort, expertise and even out of your own fear.
We think of an agoraphobic as someone who is afraid to leave her house. Could it be that you are afraid to leave your house? I left my traditional nursing house 26 years ago. For me the destination has been more beautiful than the trip I originally planned.
Your destination awaits you. All you have to do is take the first step. No guarantees of where you’ll wind up or what your journey will be – just go with it. Do something, stretch yourself. Show up.

Determine the purpose and scope of the review. If it is related to insurance claims processing, or if it is a formal physician billing function, it may be best handled by someone with experience in coding and billing.
If the request is related to a hospital or outpatient service billing issue, or if it requires totaling medical expenses for a medical-related case, you can assist in determining which bills are related to the specific issue at hand. You should obtain both the bills and relevant medical records to assess the billing issues. If you feel you are not qualified for the project, subcontract to a CLNC® consultant who is. |
