Use Your Intuitive Vision to Grow Your CLNC® Practice
by Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD

StartupNation.com, a popular online community for entrepreneurs and small business owners, interviewed me for an article on intuition. In the article, "Basic by Instinct: Making Intuition Work for You," I shared how following my intuitive vision was the key to creating legal nurse consulting – a profession that did not exist 24 years ago and is now considered one of the hottest jobs for 2007.

Creating my business was all about using my intuitive vision. When I invented the field of legal nurse consulting, most attorneys were hiring doctors to interpret the medical charts for their cases. Attorneys didn't even know what a legal nurse consultant was, much less realize that they needed legal nurse consulting services.

When those first attorneys said "no" to me, I could have become discouraged, but trusting my intuition set me on a new and exciting career path. Consulting on my first cases with attorneys validated what I knew about RNs – no one else could provide an attorney with such a cost-effective, detailed understanding of their case.

To achieve the CLNC® success you desire, you have to trust in your intuitive vision enough to show up and invest the full effort with no guarantee of the result. That might feel scary, but the only thing certain is this: If you do nothing, you'll achieve nothing.

To conceive any vision you must first get quiet. Remove the clutter and turn down the volume. Silence arouses imagination. Make it your goal to eliminate clutter from your day and your life.

  • Unclutter your physical environment at home and at work. Take 10 minutes every day to file that stack of papers that's been sitting on your credenza for months.

  • Unclutter your mind. Eliminate one outside stimulus, one chatty phone call or one TV show. CSI will solve that crime whether you're watching or not.

  • Eradicate one area of procrastination each week. Schedule it in your calendar, as you would any important appointment, and when the time arrives, do what needs to be done.
When you get quiet, you will see opportunities the rest of the world doesn't. And you won't be afraid to take a chance on these new ideas. You will be comfortable trusting your intuition, no matter what "facts" the market seems to offer.

Even fact-focused "experts" often disagree about which facts to rely on and how to interpret those so-called facts. Every set of facts is subject to as many interpretations as there are interpreters. If you wait for the facts to support your vision, you might be waiting long after someone has grabbed the vision and run with it.

Remember to use your intuitive vision the next time you are faced with a business decision.

BEST PRACTICES FOR TECHNOLOGY

Alternative Web Browsers Increase Internet Security
by Thomas M. Ziemba, BS, JD

A Web browser is the software you use to display and interact with text, images, video and other information on the World Wide Web – what we all think of as the Internet. Finding and using a secure browser is an essential step in setting up your legal nurse consulting practice.

Beginning with its release as part of the Windows® 98 operating system, Microsoft's® Internet Explorer® has been the reigning king of Web browsers. According to itnews.com.au, in August 2006 Internet Explorer® had 83% of the market. Due to Windows'® dominance in the world of computers and operating systems, Internet Explorer® is not only the most popular browser but also the one most subject to security issues or "bugs."

However, two other commonly used browsers do not share Internet Explorer's® security problems:

  • Firefox® 1.5 – a popular open-source browser developed by the Mozilla Foundation. With an open-source program anyone proficient in programming can collaborate in writing and improving the program code. Mozilla is known for its focus on security, and Firefox® is considered one of the most secure browsers. Firefox® holds 12% of the browser market (itnews.com.au).

  • Netscape® 8.1.2 – once considered the primary challenger to Internet Explorer but now out of favor. Still considered a good browser, Netscape® is also free of many of the security bugs that plague Internet Explorer® but suffers from a small market share.
While no browser is perfect, security lapses happen more often with Internet Explorer® than they do with either Firefox® or Netscape®. Frequent deliberate attacks on Internet Explorer® attempt to find and exploit weaknesses or bugs, and Microsoft® often takes weeks or months to fix even "critical" bugs.

Keeping your computer free from hackers and other dangers is easier when you use a secure browser. The advantage of Firefox® is that its open-source architecture contributes to its overall safety. Instead of hacking Firefox® to create and expose liabilities, the Firefox® community of volunteer programmers actively seek and patch problems rapidly.

While all three browsers are free, the security weaknesses of Internet Explorer® make Firefox® a great choice for safely browsing the Web. You can download Firefox® from Mozilla.com. The step-by-step download instructions also show you how to import your favorites from Internet Explorer® and make Firefox® your default Web browser. Any time an email or Web page tries to open your Web browser, Firefox® will defeat such attacks often aimed at Internet Explorer®.

Other Firefox® features you'll enjoy:

  • Improved control against pop-up ads.
  • Tabbed browsing.
  • Greater control over private information.
  • Better storage of passwords, information for forms and download history.
Should you abandon Internet Explorer® entirely? No. Since Internet Explorer® is the dominant player, most Web designers optimize their sites for it. As a result, not all websites display as intended when viewed with other browsers. Also, to keep your Windows® operating system current with Microsoft® Update, it's best to use Internet Explorer®. Consider installing Firefox® as your primary browser.
