9 Ways to Increase Your CLNC® Fees

- Charge the highest possible fee. Don't enter the legal nurse consulting market charging too little. If you do, you're leaving money on the table that you will never get back.
- Learn to say "No." No is the most powerful word in the dictionary. The easiest way to start charging higher fees is to be willing to say "No." This frees you to walk away from a deal that does not support your vision of yourself as a highly paid consultant. You don't have to have every attorney's business. There are 1,104,706 attorneys out there. You only need two or three to keep you busy full-time.
- Resist the temptation to charge too low just to get the business. Only offer a discount to an attorney who is willing to guarantee a substantial amount of business each month. Never discount out of desperation.
- Increase your CLNC® fee 5-10% every year. Small increments pay off substantially down the road, yet attorneys don't consider small increases substantial in their overall budget.
- When you have more business than you can handle or want, this is the perfect time to significantly increase your fee. Start increasing with your least important attorney-clients one at a time. You can also subcontract or hire employees to meet the increased workload. Leveraging others' time is one of the smartest and quickest ways to increase your revenue.
- When you are giving more value, it's time to increase your fee. For example, if you have been a CLNC® for 10 years and you can screen a case in one hour, you're giving more value than the beginner who might take eight hours to screen a comparable case.
- Clearly define your USP, develop a solid gold reputation and brand yourself as the indispensable consultant your attorney-clients cannot live without. Attorneys will seek you because of who you are, your reputation and your brand. When people seek you, you are in the driver's seat when it comes to fees.
- Let go of difficult clients who expect you to work for low fees. You must manage not only your time and your billable hours but also your energy. A difficult client actually drains both your time and your energy. It's time to let him go and open the door for an attorney who values you and will pay accordingly.
- Give value for the dollar and produce superb work product. Smart attorneys understand that a CLNC® who charges $150/hour provides higher value than an untrained legal nurse consultant who charges $75/hour.
